Beit She arim National Park

Beit she'arim is a beautiful national Park, which is located in the North of Israel, about twenty kilometers East of Haifa, and borders the town of Kiryat Tivon in the North-East.
The Park is located on the territory of archeological excavations of the ancient city and the necropolis.
Although Beit she'arim was chartered city, one of the first documentary mention of him is confined to the very end of the Second temple period, in the time of Beit she'arim was the main centre of the estates of Berenice, daughter of Agrippa I and sister of Agrippa II.
The heyday of the city dates from the end of the II century, the city became the seat of the Sanhedrin after the Bar Kochba revolt in 132-135 gg.
From the beginning III. the necropolis of Beit she'arim was the main burial place of the Jews.
Beit she'arim was almost completely destroyed by the Roman Governor of Gaul at the period of the suppression the Jewish revolt in 352, however, the small settlement continued to live in this place in the Byzantine and Arab periods.
Ancient Beit she'arim was at the top of the hill, at a height of 137 metres above sea level, with a total area of approximately 10,000 square meters.
In the North-Eastern part of the hill, archeologists found remains of very large edifices and also quite great synagogue, resembling a Basilica and is decorated in the style characteristic for the synagogues of Galilee III in.
Excavations were, for the most part, are concentrated in the ancient necropolis.
In this place found carved into the rock of the catacombs with a peculiar burial niches. Some of the catacombs were family burial places.
According to custom, burial took place in caves. In each cave was about four graves. Cave burial is a sort of small room with niches on the sides and several hollows in the centre, adapted for the disposal of the head of household and his wife. Beit Shearim has about 30 caves-graves.
Ornaments that serve as decoration for burial, often composed of Jewish symbols and images of ritual objects, including menorahs and Ark of the Covenant.
In addition, there was found about 250 epitaphs. Many of which were written in Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic language or dialect of Palmyra.
In the epitaph was the name of the deceased, and the name of his father, and often even his origin, occupation and the place where he was born. Some inscriptions contain words of praise to the deceased or an expression of sorrow in connection with his death.
Together with Greek names you can meet Jewish names, though written in Greek letters. There are inscriptions confirming the belief in eternal life. Also two epitaphs written in Greek in the style of Homer. In the same mausoleum was discovered re-used sarcophagus with drawings of scenes from Greek mythology
